4/11/16 – I just witnessed music history last night. A virtually unknown supergroup, Holy Holy played the Chicago House of Blues in an un-intended tribute for the recently departed rock icon David Bowie. Among others the group was comprised of Bowie’s old drummer and the last surviving Spider from Mars – Woody Woodmansey along with the producer of all of Bowie’s music – Tony Visconti. On the 45th anniversary of the albums release the band laid out the entire The Man Who Sold the Earth album in what can only be described as a one of a kind experience. The album had never been played live before even by Bowie and while I was familiar with several of the songs I never realized the sonic force that laid within. Guitarists Paul Cuddeford (Linked to Bob Geldof) and James Stevenson (formerly with Gene Loves Jezebel, The Cult and Generation X) revved up the 70’s dueling guitar sound to a fever pitch to breathe life into long dormant compositions. Glen Gregory (Heaven 17) channeled David Bowie and gave an eerie feeling that the legend was somehow infusing his essence into the event via Glen’s voice. After the album was finished the band kept up the momentum with a number of other Bowie classics like The Supermen, Moonage Daydream, Life on Mars, Rock and Roll Suicide and many others including a truly moving rendition of Ziggy Stardust. Mr. Visconti was so overjoyed by the crowds overwhelmingly positive reaction to the show that he added a bonus encore to our show and we were treated to Time, Starman (bonus song) and a bring down the house version of Suffragette City. The floor was physically moving beneath my feet and for a brief moment in time we were all transported back to another era where “glam” rock was king. Amazingly I found Woody in the crowd area after the show and he could not have been more gracious and appreciative. I shook his hand but I told him the real reason I was there was to hear their original material. Holy Holy is not only the most amazing David Bowie “cover” band ever, but, they have some incredible original songs that they did not get to. If you get a chance check out House of Cards or You Cannot Call for Love Like a Dog which you can find on this site you will be moved.
